Well, with the winter of 2012-2013 firmly behind us, I've had a nice bit of time to rest my hands from their busy work, but I just cannot turn off my mind! So, now is when I look back at the past season, see what worked, what my customers liked, what they didn't, and start planning for Fall.

I hope everyone has a brilliant, fun-filled Spring and Summer. I'll be out, enjoying the sunshine and warm breezes as much as possible. I will also be spending some free time working out new patterns, learning new techniques, and trying out new fibers. I love this time of year for that very reason. I get to play.

Another thing I'm looking forward to is an awesome new niece (I already know she's gonna be awesome, 'cause her parents kinda are), who will be coming into the world this September. And with this Awesome Girl comes the opportunity to try out some new, cool, funky baby items. I generally make items that I, myself, would wear. Stuff that interests and appeals to me. Now, though, I am psyched to make a whole slew of stuff for Awesome Girl. Funny how kids can change your perspective.

I will also have the opportunity, this Summer, to snag my tech-genius Hubby during his all-too-rare off-time, to help me build an official website. I am SO not savvy enough to get that set up on my own, which is why it has taken forever. Good thing I have a Hubby who is not only handsome as heck, but he is an absolute WHIZ with all things technology. (How'd I get so lucky?)

In the meantime, feel free to check out my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/HookMeUpBrooklyn). I find it much easier to update with photos and whatnot, so that's where you'll find the latest info on what i'm up to.

As always, if you have any interest in my hand-made goodies and want to order a custom made piece, please feel free to drop a line (HookMeUpBrooklyn(at)gmail(dot)com). I'd LOVE to make something for you.

For now, as Lucy Coe likes to say, "Ta!"
I'm pretty certain that this boost of energy is in large part due to the fabulous weather we've been having in New York City. Spring has a way of rejuvenating us. We open the windows to let in the fresh air, scrub the house clean, notice the budding trees and flowers (always brings a smile to my face). Even my dog has a little extra spring in his step (pun intended)! I have been enjoying spending time with dear friends I didn't get to see much of this winter while I was hibernating and hard at work with my hook and fiber. All in all, things are great.

Of course, there is also an element of exhaustion and relief that the busy winter crochet season is now, for the most part, behind me. This year brought so many exciting moments. Through Hook Me Up! Brooklyn. I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, all of whom have been so complimentary of my work. That's very gratifying. When you sit at home working away, creating, imagining - all by yourself - it's a great feeling to step out into the world and have people respond positively to what you've created. I've done theatre for most of my life, and throughout the rehearsal process there are always people around to direct you, guide you, and collaborate with you as you work toward performance. You get to have that feedback. It's not the same experience with this other side of my creative life. I mean, there are friends to bounce ideas off of and draw inspiration from, but at the end of the day, the cheese stands alone.

What I have realized is that as we put ourselves out there, and show the world what we've got, we have the opportunity to draw inspiration from the people we meet and the responses we get - both positive and negative. This is something I have always known as a performer, but didn't understand that I could apply it to my crochet creativity as well. Now, I see inspiration everywhere! I've never considered myself someone who was into Fashion with a capital "F"(ironically, my office is in NYC's Fashion District), but I now understand, more deeply than ever, how ALL of the world's creative energy is tied together. Now, what I see as I walk down the street sets off ideas in my mind like fireworks. There have been moments this last year when I was just about BURSTING with ideas; I could not get them sketched/jotted down on paper fast enough! This is not a problem. This is a blessing.

This wheel doesn't stop spinning, I've got many exciting things in store for Fall/Winter 2012-2013, the preparations for which start NOW. Some of these things will even involve you. Yes, YOU! So stay tuned.

And thanks for hangin' out.
I have been wanting to include a Houndstooth infintiy scarf for some time, and I have finally had the opportunity to work on it. I expect that there will be more houndstooth petterned items in the future, as it is one of my favorite patterns, but here's a little something to whet your appetite. Please feel free to contact me for ordering and pricing information.
Ciao!Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826216810550538605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5795220305070315193.post-58931117679265242682012-01-10T21:43:00.001-05:002012-01-12T14:07:39.600-05:00She's Here! She's Here! She's arrived! My super-cool dress form has been delivered and I was so excited that I had to dress her up immediately! Here she is rockin' a Chatelaine scarf:

Pretty, ain't she? You can count on plenty of new photos headin' your way real soon.

All my excitement over the new dress form has made me realize that I never formally introduced you to my first model, Cat:

That's Cat. She's pretty fly. She loves to rock her retro shades and has been known to dye her hair pink from time to time. I just just never know what to expect from her! But I'm happy to let Cat be Cat, 'cause she makes all my hats look freshhhhhh!!!

So now you know what this means, don't you? This means that I'm going to need a name for my dress form. I expect that her personality will start to show itself in short time and from there her name should become apparent, but I'm open to suggestions.

One more thing, while you're here, you should take your little mouse over to the right and click "Join this site." C'mon, you know you want to.

Peace!Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826216810550538605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5795220305070315193.post-45364276553019377842012-01-08T12:07:00.000-05:002012-01-08T12:07:54.429-05:00New Year and Many Thanks!Happy Belated New Year!

2011 was an unexpectedly exciting year for Hook Me Up! Brooklyn. It started slowly, but ended in a flurry of activity and creativity. I am so grateful for everyone who has supported this new venture of mine, from helping out with the small details and doing research to helping to spread the word and, of course, purchasing my goods. I was overwhelmed with the reaction to my work. I was definitely nervous heading into the holiday season; not sure how the masses would respond to what I had spent months working on. So, I say a giant THANK YOU to everyone who supported Hook Me Up! Brooklyn. in 2011!

2012, here I come!

Danielle

P.S. As a holiday treat to myself, I have ordered a new dress form, which I will use to take photos of my scarves and cowls and whatnot. So excited! Can't wait to get it! Here she is...
Having bought more than enough yarn, I thought I'd make her a hat to go with. Here's what I wound up with (I hope she likes it!):

Simple style. Super-soft yarn. Feminine flower detail. I named it after my Grandmother, Beatrice. Just seems like something she would have liked. I'm happy with it :-)Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826216810550538605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5795220305070315193.post-12337210743101281982011-12-15T12:28:00.002-05:002012-01-12T14:08:39.155-05:00Customer PhotosHere's are a couple of shots of the adorable Paula wearing the Newsie with a flower...
I am hoping to take some new pictures in the week ahead and publish shortly thereafter. Your patience will be rewarded.
I've been working pretty steadily, stitching up hats in most of my free time, and as much as I love it, I have to admit I got a little tired. I needed to take a little break from the ole' hook and yarn. Achy hands can only do so much. So I took a little rest and it did wonders. Resting my creative mind opened it up to so many ideas! So here I am, back with hook in hand, ready to face this new week! Off I go!

P.S. I'm on the Twitter! @HookMeUpBklyn WOOT WOOT!
Cool weather, falling leaves, pumpkin flavored everything! It's all just wonderful. It is also my favorite season for another reason: the weather is just right for bustin' out my favorite hats and scarves. I get to finish off my look each day with just the right hand-made accessory to suit my mood. Newsboy caps for chillin' with my girlfriends, pretty berets for that date night with my fiance, and a chic cloche to "top off" my professional look each weekday.

I have been stitching like crazy, getting ready for the December holiday rush, and I nearly forgot about my Autumn styles! I'll be posting pictures soon of items available get you through he best season of them all!
That was a very busy, yarnalicious weekend! I need a vacation now. Or at the very least, a good long rest for my stitchy fingers. Maybe a nap too.

My very fashionable friend Sherry accompanied me to some craft stores on Saturday and acted as a very helpful "color consultant." I often have trouble thinking outside of my own color preferences, so Sherry was a much needed second set of eyes to help me choose some awesome colors for the fall collection.

Our shopping frenzy began at Joann Fabrics on Staten Island. Not my usual craft haunt, but on the recommendation of a friend I gave it a shot. Now, perhaps this store satisfies my friend's fabric needs, but as a yarn source this place leaves a lot to be desired. Yarn was displayed in about five different areas in the store. Yes, you read that correctly. Little bit o' yarn over here, some more in cardboard boxes over there. Oy! What a pain in the tuchus! Also, not that I expect any one craft store to carry every brand's entire line of fiber, but there was so much yarn by so many different manufacturers, that it didn't do any one line justice. Maybe that doesn't make sense to anyone else, but to me it was inadequate. The store was mostly empty of patrons, which made for a peaceful shopping experience, but the staff was inattentive to the few of us that were there. We waited with a few others at the cash register for what felt like an eternity because store employees were no where to be found. Not a one. Oh well, good thing the patrons present at the time were good, law-abiding citizens who didn't just walk off with their crafty goodies. PLUS: Yarn stock did contain a decent amount of some reliable work-horses, so I was able to pick up some all-purpose stash and apply the 20% off coupon I received for signing up for their on-line mailing list. Yay for discounts!

Feeling not completely fulfilled with my haul, we headed down the road to my trusted ole' Michael's. Well-stocked, lots of helpful staff always on hand, Michael's is my go-to craft store. While I still didn't find all of the yarn I needed for my upcoming projects (thank goodness for the Lion Brand Store in Manhattan!!!), I was able to pick up many of the other crafty items on my list: plastic canvas (for hat brims!), sewing notions, a nifty new crochet tool box (it's hot pink!), a new hook (size J - I lost my last one...I think the couch ate it), and some other doo-dads and what-nots.

It's amazing how happy I always feel after a trip to the craft store. I got so excited about my new loot I ran home, organized my tools and new stash, and got to stitching! First up was a beautiful and soft new cowl made with a yarn I had never used before, Lion Brand's Jiffy. I am now in love with this yarn AND my new cowl, which I worked up quickly while watching the telly. I then proceeded to complete one other project (a swirly scarf) and start a third! My hands are definitely tired, so I'm glad to be at work today (did I just say that?) to give my hands a rest. That is, until I get home this evening and the stitching frenzy resumes!Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826216810550538605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5795220305070315193.post-23199482841713166392011-09-06T15:34:00.001-04:002011-09-06T15:36:05.993-04:00Stitchy FingersMy stitchy fingers have been very busy this summer! I have been working on putting together my updated catalog for 2011/2012 as well as creating a healthy stock of my most popular pieces, which will be available for purchase soon. Thank you to everyone who has shown interest in my work. I'm excited for this winter season.

There will be more info to come, but it looks like I will be participating in a few holiday and craft fairs this winter.

Stay tuned kids!Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03826216810550538605noreply@blogger.com0
